Properties: It is an organic compound, appearing as colorless crystals or a liquid. It's flammable, has low toxicity, and bears the scent of eucalyptus oil. The compound dissolves in ethanol, ether, benzene, and glacial acetic acid but not in water, inorganic acids, or alkaline solutions. Preparation: By condensing chlorobenzene and phenol in caustic soda with a cupric oxide catalyst, diphenyl ether is synthesized. The product is then purified through alkaline washing and distillation.
Uses: Serving as an intermediary in organic synthesis, it’s prominently featured in the fragrance industry for soaps and is a raw material in synthetic resin manufacturing and other organic syntheses. Mixed with biphenyl, it functions as a high-temperature heat transfer medium in industrial settings, operable up to 350°C.
